Chapter Twelve

CRYSTAL

After Julian’s very public claiming we dance for a while longer before he takes me over to Levi.

I glance between the two of them. “What’s going on?”

Julian smiles at me before pressing a quick kiss to my lips. “I’ll let Levi explain. I’ll see you shortly.”

Julian quickly disappears into the crowd. I meet Levi’s gaze and find him grinning at me, his eyebrows raised.

I narrow my eyes at him. “What?”

He chuckles. “Nothing. I just wasn’t expecting Julian to plant one on you like that. That wasn’t necessarily a part of the plan for the night.”

“What do you mean by that? What plan? For what?”

He shakes his head. His eyes move beyond me, scanning the room. “Let’s step to the side where there are less ears.”

I nod and let him lead me toward a less crowded area of the ballroom. Once we’ve stopped, he meets my gaze. “While you were with Julian, Maxwell told me that you now know about all the issues around here regarding your presence here.”

“This plan...it’s related to these issues?”

He nods, crossing his arms over his chest. “Yes. The plan for the night was simply to keep a close eye on you and make sure that you didn’t go with anyone we knew had an issue with your being here.”

I raise an eyebrow. “That doesn’t explain why Julian left me with you just now.”

He sighs. “He’s going to set out some feelers in the crowd about their feelings regarding you.”

“And why was I not brought into this plan until now?” I ask, doing my best to hide my annoyance. Based on Levi’s wince, I don’t succeed very well.

“We didn’t want you to know about the issues until you were more settled.”

“That’s a pretty crappy excuse for blindsiding me with the fact that people here hate me almost as much as they do at my parents,” I tell him bluntly.

I know I’m not being fair to him about this, but surprises have never ended well for me. Especially surprises like this.

He runs a hand through his hair, looking frustrated. “I know, I know. I wish that someone else hadn’t told you about it before we got the chance to. You have no idea how sorry I am about that, Crystal, but I’m not sorry that we were just trying to help keep you safe and happy.”

I glare at him without any heat. “Damn it, Levi,” I groan. “How the hell do you manage to piss me off in two seconds and make me feel better in less time than it took to piss me off?”

He chuckles, his eyes lighting up with amusement. “I don’t know, but I’m glad I’m able to.”

My attention moves to the side as Celeste stomps over to us, looking like she sucked on a lemon. I bite my lip to stop my laugh from surfacing.

“What’s your problem?” I ask.

She glances over her shoulder snarling. “My family is here. I was very clear when I said I didn’t want them here, but obviously, my wishes were ignored.
